Delta Chi mourns the loss of Betty Winslow on December 23, 2021
Mrs. Winslow graduated from the School of Radiologic Technology in Norfolk, VA with a Certificate in Radiology. She continued her education at Greensboro College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and then completed her education at Appalachian State University with a Master Degree in Community Education. She was program Director, School of Radiologic Technology at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. She was a member of American Society of Radiologic Technologists where she served as the Chairman, and was President. She served on the Association of Educators in Radiological Sciences as Chairman. Mrs. Winslow also had had many other honors in life. She loved people and wanted to be a help to all. She once said that her mother wanted her to stay home and tend flowers but she wanted to grow minds.
Delta Chi mourns the loss of charter member Etta Idol on December 7, 2020
Mrs. Idol graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School at the age of 15, continuing her education at Women's College in Greensboro (UNC-G). She completed her Bachelors’ and Masters’ Degrees at Appalachian State University leading to a teaching career and a lifelong love of learning. She firmly believed in the transformative power of education, and was Wilkes County's first Teacher of the Year.
She was instrumental in establishing the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #67 and was a founding member of the Wilkes County Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma honorary educational society, proudly wearing her 50- and 60-year membership pins. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Delta Chi mourns the loss of Dr. Essie Hayes on November 22, 2020
Dr. Hayes invested in the people of Wilkes over more than four decades. She was devoted to public education as an eighth grade, high school and Wilkes Community College teacher. As school board member and chairman, she wholeheartedly led the successful 1990s campaign for Wilkes middle schools.
Essie was a Watauga County native, a 1947 Cum Laude graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College where she later earned her Master’s degree in education. She earned the Doctor of Education degree from Nova University while continuing her community college career.
